The South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce gathered with community members to celebrate a ribbon cutting for Mary’s Village, an inspiring new initiative from Mary’s Shelter designed to provide a pathway to long-term stability and homeownership for mothers in need across Baldwin County.

Mary’s Village is a transitional housing program created to bridge the gap between emergency shelter and independent living. Building on the mission of Mary’s Shelter, which provides a safe home for homeless pregnant women and their children, the Village offers a two-year program focused on financial independence, stability, and ultimately, homeownership.

During their time at Mary’s Shelter, residents participate in a comprehensive 15-month program that includes prenatal and postnatal care, life skills classes, parenting education, GED attainment, employment placement, and financial savings. After completing this program, many graduates face significant barriers to affording independent housing due to the rising cost of living in Baldwin County.

Mary’s Village was developed as a direct response to this growing need. The program provides transitional housing where residents pay a monthly program fee. These funds are placed into escrow throughout their stay, allowing participants to build meaningful savings over time. At the end of the two-year program, residents will have saved thousands to use as a down payment on a home, creating a realistic and sustainable path to homeownership.

In addition to financial support, Mary’s Village partners with local banks and nonprofit organizations to provide credit counseling, budgeting education, and home maintenance training. This holistic approach ensures residents are equipped not only to purchase a home, but to successfully maintain it long-term.

Through this program, Mary’s Shelter continues its commitment to changing lives by focusing not only on immediate needs, but on lasting outcomes.
